King of the South is the first book in the Belgrave Dynasty series and it's a spin-off of the "Surviving time " series. I was disappointed because there's no indication in the book or in the blurb that this is a spin-off and it was strange to read a historical novel, set in 1919, where a character spoke about " Friends" or other TV shows. I did not know that Serene, a side character was a time traveler and the heroine from the " Surviving time" series, and it would've been nice to know because I would have read it, and probably some facts in " King of the South" would have made more sense.
The cover is beautiful. I read the blurb after seeing it and that's how I decided to read this book.
The plot: In 1919, after the Great War has ended, Rainey Pleasonton finds out that her brother is never returning home, when the lawyer read his testament, she finds out that he left her a dowry of 60.000 dollars if she is to marry within 60 days after his funeral. She is shocked and angry because she is 28 years old and she wants to marry only for love, but because she is stubborn and considered wild, she had no suitors until that moment.
Livingston is 11 years her senior and her brother's best friend, so this is why Miles, Rainey's brother made him the executor to his little sister’s dowry. Livingston was always at Miles's house, so he watched Rainey grow from a little girl who chased them around with a bow and an arrow, into a beautiful woman, the only woman immune to his charm.
Rainey and Livinstron have a frienemies relationship and they always poke at each other and they are always arguing about things.
Because Rainey finds out that her family was left penniless after some misfortunate investments, she understands that she has to marry within the 60 days period, in order to receive her dowry and to keep her family's legacy, so with the help of Serene, Livingston's sister in law, Rainey tries to find a proper husband. Livingston finds her idea preposterous and tries to help her but she doesn't want to receive a loan from him because she believes that the help he is offering is not for her, but for her deceased brother.
Rainey has had always a thing for Livingston but she had a hard time admitting it to herself, so when they spend a lot of time together in that 60 days period of time, her feelings are all over the place. Between them is perfect chemistry and when Livinstron kisses her for the first time he realizes that he cannot stop, that he was always in love with her.
As Rainey is trying to find a good husband, Livinstron is driving himself mad because he thinks that he is supposed to love her from afar, because he thinks that he is not good enough. All changes when Rainey hears a discussion between Livingston and his sister, and from that moment on, she is trying to build up walls against her heart, because even though she loves him, she knows that he would not settle.
I liked the setting and the slow burn romance but the book was slow and predictable so this is why it gets only 3*.
